She didn’t have to hesitate at all. "I do like," she told him. "Matt."

She pushed herself up on tiptoe to kiss him, then, as one, they turned to make their way down the stairs. The car was packed, the lodge was empty. They’d left the key on the kitchen table, as the caretaker had asked them to. Kendall told herself not to feel too sad as they closed the front door behind them and checked to make sure it was locked. She would be coming back in a couple of months to see the place again. To meet Matthias’s—no, Matt’s—friends. To see fulfilled the dream the Seven Samurai had made in college. She was a part of that dream now, she realized as they made their way down the steps. Part of Matt’s dream. Part of his life, just as he was part of hers.

No, not part of it, she realized. And not two lives. They were one now. In work. In life. In love.

And that, she thought, was exactly where they needed to be.
